My hands ached, but I couldn't let go. I wouldn't. The cries had settled down. All that was left was the silent lapping of waves. It was all too easy; to let go, to let the cold submerge me.
A steady flow of voices stream around the room. Elaborate gowns illuminated from the glow of chandeliers. Their beaming faces light up from compliments passed around. This was going to be a night no one would forget. I???d make sure of it. A steady stream of cabin crew shuffle in and out of the dining hall. Bumping into each other every so often with a slight mutter of apology, as they hustle to provide guests with napkins and cutlery. An orchestra positioned in the corner play notes in harmony of each other providing a soothing tone which settles over the room. I glance impatiently at the clock. It ticks slowly. She should be here soon. This is all for her.
Heads turn, as she enters the room. She looks up at me, eyes lit up in amazement at what I had created for her. Looking into those eyes, it takes me back.
It???s been 3 years now. Since I met her. I remember it all, every detail. I had stumbled into the bakery, my clothes soaked, hair flattened by the rain pouring down outside. The warm aroma of apple filled the room as she pulled a pie out of the oven. Flaky sheets of pastry fell to the ground as she transferred it to a rack to cool. She had glanced up, and there I was. Clothes plastered to my skin, water pooling on the floor. She had provided me with towels to dry off, got me seated and offered me a slice of the pie. So it had begun. Each week after going to the gym, I would turn up at this little bakery, order the same pastry which we would eat whilst discussing the day???s events. I wanted to recreate this for her.
I excused myself from the party, making my way to the kitchen. I could smell it, that familiar scent. From the oven, a trail of cinnamon apple and nutmeg lingered in the air. Inside, I could imagine it. A golden pie sitting patiently, and within it a perfectly round ring made of diamonds and silver. I was going to propose to her.
I don???t remember much after that. There was a loud thundering sound as the ship was torn apart. Screaming, crying. The water had risen, pooling around my feet. Higher and higher it went. The ground broke into shards below me. The ship was sinking deeper and deeper. I grabbed hold of anything I could find. A pair of pans hung above me, their handles looped around a pair of hooks. I had reached for them, fingers numb. And there I held on. For all my dear life could manage. I could hear sobbing as each body sunk below the waves. I could hear her. Calling for me. I couldn???t move, no matter how much I wanted to. Her shouts getting frantic. But then there was nothing. Not a sound. Just me and the pair of pans which had saved me. The scent of pie long gone.
