The Life Within The Monarch
There was nothing but darkness. There was no light, no room to move, no room to breath. Changes were happening and I could feel them all. My body became a war zone of conflicting emotions, cravings never before felt. I became unusually shaped, everything became more and more different. Then when it seemed that the changes would never end, everything stopped and the world around me became still and unmoving. I was done and could now shed the darkness that was surrounding me. I pushed forcibly against the wall, straining to break free. When all seemed lost and I was ready to give up sunlight filtered passed through the cracks which began to widen. The warmth produced from the streaming sunlight surrounded me, enveloped me in a feeling of security and safety, never before had I felt so alive. All around me light swarmed bringing warmth and setting my wings aglow with vibrance. At last the casing around me fell to the forsaken ground below and left me suspended on the tree branch where my cocoon had once stood.
Above me stood the maze of many branches fluttering their individual leaves proudly in the neverending wind. Below layed a wide variety of shrubs, grasses and flowers. The flowers stood tall, basking in the glory of the sun. Each color telling a story all its own. The orange, pink and red tell of the setting of the sun, setting the sky ablaze in an aurora of colors before sinking below the horizon and leaving the sky pitch black and full of jewels. The pink tells a lovers tragic tale full of sorrow and regret. The yellow tells of the strongest friendships that not even death could break. It was a beautiful sight to gaze upon and as I stood there with the trees rough bark grazing the underside of my feet I realized my wings had begun to flap with anticipation. I wanted to get closer to the beauty and maybe be a part of it.
I mustered up some courage and began to flap my wings faster and faster climbing through the wind going higher and higher, rising through the tree branches and above the trees. I spotted a cluster of daisies below and angled myself to dive. Never before had I felt such exhilaration. The wind whipped past my face and all around me was a blur. I spread my wings before I could hit the solid ground below and I fluttered to the nearest flower. I landed softly and uncoiled my mouth and injected it into the flower. The warm liquid of nectar flowed passed my mouth and into my body, rejuvenating me and filling me with energy. The flower had no more to offer but my hunger was not yet satisfied. I wanted more and with each flower the hunger grew in intensity. Never before had I felt a hunger with such intensity. As a larvae, the hunger was there and never moved, it never grew, it remained docile and easy to handle. This hunger was entirely different, its intensity was staggering and with every sip it only seemed stronger. At last as the sun dipped low behind the horizon and night settled in, the hunger subsided and so did the energy within me. Tired and weary from the days events, I searched for a place to rest and found a suitable spot on the lower branches of a maple tree. As I rested my wings I pondered the most prominent thought in my mind, is this what the rest of my life is going to be. Wake, eat, rest and begin again? Is this all I was meant to do, meant to accomplish? As I pondered this the sun began its gentle rise into the sky. The faint glow woke me from my depressing inquiry of greater purpose and I fluttered my wings and searched for my next meal. The day remained uneventful the hunger subsided a great deal faster than last time and I spent my free time riding the currents of the wind, lazily floating on the lifting breeze. Toward the end of the day I spotted a human running through the field I was flying above. I knew little about humans other than they were strange and seemed to talk a lot but the human I was looking at was different. It was a girl who didn???t look very old, she had finished her running and was now laying in the grass, her breathing was rapid and shallow. Her burgundy hair was sprawled out behind her, a river of brown. I flew as close as I dared to go and observed her. She moved very little, she layed back in the suns warm glow, a small smile pulled at the corners of her lips. Eventually she moved to the side and before I even had time to respond I was staring into her sapphire blue eyes which were currently focused intently on me.
I began to flap as fast as I could because I knew what was coming next, I had seen it happen before when I was still a caterpillar. She was going to try to catch me and I knew that if she did I was going to die. Humans have yet to understand the fragile nature of my kind, we break easily and with each passing moment in their colossal hands we moved closer and closer to deaths doorway. My prediction proved right, as I moved to run the human sprang up and reached her hands toward me. I felt the rush of air as she missed me by mere millimeters. My heart was beating, pounding against my chest with the strength of a wrecking ball. Never before have I been so scared, my life flew by me in flashes of the past. Each showing me the best and worst times of my life. My first growth spurt, my one and only friend, the birds attacking and eating the only friend I had ever known, the lonely and heart breaking days spent afterword.
Then as if by magic the I was speeding through the meadow far out of the humans reach and at that moment I knew I was safe. The energy was exhausted from my body, I was drained and drooping with exhaustion. I forced myself to fly farther I found a few flowers and filled myself up, as I finished the day had passed once more and the sky was black and the stars twinkled. The moon radiated light, covering me and everything else in a ghostly pale glow. Crickets began erupting into their nightly songs searching for their mates in the shadows. I found a place to rest and settled myself in. I reflected on the human and how close I had come to death. Even the thought of being caught sent my heart beating loudly in my chest. I had to be more careful. I also thought about my friend, it had been a long time since he appeared in my mind the sorrow the memories brought always proved to difficult to handle. I still blame myself for his death, everyday I still think it should have been me, and even now with everything that has happened and all the great things that I have come to experience I still would take his place in a heartbeat given the chance. I will never forgive myself for what happened to him, this feeling of regret and sorrow will always be a part of me, forever a part of of what makes me who I am.
As these thoughts ran through my mind the sun began its rise once more. I???m like the sun I thought, destined to do the same things for the rest of my life, living with my mistakes and dealing with each challenge I am faced with and as I fluttered toward the sun I felt relieved to have finally found out what I was made to do, and like the little girl in the meadow a small smile pulled at the corners of my mind.
